Alberta Women’s Science Network (AWSN) is a not-for-profit that supports advocacy towards a more diverse and inclusive STEM future in Alberta. AWSN began in 1993 with a focus on supporting girls and women in STEM and has since then expanded to focus on all under-represented communities. AWSN’s primary focus is to connect, unite, support, and promote STEM programs throughout the province. AWSN activities include supporting programs through funding, in-kind support, and volunteer resource connections. These activities are categorized under three core pillars: Recruitment, Retention, and Recognition. AWSN provides support through event funding, services, and information sharing for programs that recruit underrepresented youth into STEM fields. They help new ideas and fledgling projects evolve into long-term, sustainable endeavors. Retention involves assisting the talent that already exists in the STEM field and reducing challenges to advancing their career. AWSN supports programs that target individuals at all stages of their STEM career, including undergraduate students, advanced degree holders, individuals coming back from an extended leave, or those looking for a supportive community. Lastly, AWSN recognizes individuals and organizations that are making a difference in their community. Recognition comes in the form of biographies, mentor stories, AWSN mentoring and volunteer awards, AWSN scholarships, and educational bursaries.
